In April 2018, China’s total retail sales of consumer goods reached 2,854.2 billion yuan (US$446.71 billion), up by 9.4% year-on-year (nominal growth rate), according to National Bureau of Statistics of China. Of the total, the retail sales of consumer goods of enterprises units above designated size reached 1,124.1 billion yuan (US$175.93 bn), with an increase of 7.8%.
From January to April 2018, the total retail sales of consumer goods in China reached 11,881.7 billion yuan (US$1,859.6 bn), up by 9.7% year-on-year. Of the total, the retail sales value of consumer goods of units above designated size was 4,613.7 billion yuan (US$722.09 bn), up 8.4 percent.
In terms of different areas, the retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas was 2,452.8 billion yuan (US$383.89 bn) in April 2018, up by 9.2% year-on-year, while that in rural areas was 401.4 billion yuan (US$62.82 bn), up 10.6% year-on-year. From January to April, the retail sales of consumer goods in China’s urban areas was 10,162.4 billion yuan (US$1,590.51 bn), up 9.6% year-on-year; rural areas retail sales of consumer goods reached 1,719.3 billion yuan (US$269.09 bn), up by 10.7 percent.
In terms of different consumption patterns, the catering services gained 302.4 billion yuan (US$47.33 bn), up 9.6% year-on-year in April 2018. The retail sales of goods gained 2,551.7 billion yuan (US$399.36 bn), up 9.4%. From January to April, the catering services gained 1,273.6 billion yuan (US$199.33 bn), up 10.1%, year-on-year; the retail sales of goods gained 10,608.1 billion yuan (US$1660.27 bn), up by 9.7 percent.
The income of retail sales amount of goods of units above-designated size in April was 1,054 billion yuan (US$164.96 bn), up by 7.8% year-on-year. From January to April, the retail sales amount of goods of units above designated size was 4,324.8 billion yuan (US$676.87 bn), up by 8.4 percent year-on-year.
From January to April 2018, China’s online retail sales of goods and services was 2,579.2 billion yuan (US$403.74 bn), increased 32.4% year-on-year. Of which, the online retail sales of physical goods was 1,949.5 billion yuan (US$305.16 bn), increased 31.2%, accounting for 16.4% of the total retail sales of consumer goods; of the online retail sales of physical goods, food, clothing and other commodities went up by 44.9%, 28.0%, and 31.1% respectively.
