Huawei benefited from 4G LTE pick up in China, as all Chinese telcos subsidized 4G handsets to encourage Chinese consumers to upgrade from 3G. Outside of China, large volumes of its lower-cost range, the Y series, fuelled growth across most regions.

Lenovo had a record quarter in China despite fierce competitions from other Chinese brands. Less than 5% of Lenovo’s shipments were registered outside of China in the second quarter of 2013, and this share nearly tripled in Q2 2014 picking up the largest volumes particularly in BRIIC countries.

Total mobile phone shipping volume reached 38 million in July 2014, 34 million of which were smartphones.

The worldwide smartphone market grew 25.3% year over year in the second quarter of 2014 (2014Q2), establishing a new single quarter record of 301.3 million shipments, according to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

With the rapid adoptions of smartphone and mobile payment among Chinese consumers in China, many have experienced high user and revenue growth on mobile internet, such as Qihoo 360 with 641 million mobile users in Q2 2014 and Ctrip whose mobile apps had been downloaded over 200 million times in the second quarter.
