The shipment volume of Xiaomi smartphones totaled 23.16 million in the second quarter of 2017 with an increase of 70% QoQ according to an internal letter by Lei Jun.
Phone companies shipped a total of 347.4 million smartphones worldwide in the first quarter of 2017. Huawei grew nearly 22% in China as shipments climbed from 28.1 million units last year, to 34.2 million units in Q1 2017 according to IDC. Xiaomi’s shipment volume was less than half of Huawei’s ranking the fifth in Q1 2017.
Lu Jun attributes the second quarter’s success to technology innovations, integrated offline and online sales channels, and the explosive growth of international sales.
Xiaomi filed 7,701 patents and acquired 2,895 licenses in 2016. Xiaomi launched its own chipset Surge S1 and multiple new smartphone models including Xiaomi 5C, 6, and Max 2 in the first half of 2017.

Xiaomi was the top selling smartphone brand in this year’s 618 mid-year shopping festival on Tmall, JD, and Suning. In addition to its online sales channels, Xiaomi has built 123 offline retail stores.
Xiaomi sales in India has increased by 328% in the first half of 2017, compared to the same period in 2016, ranking second. Its Redmi Note 4X is the top selling model in India. Xiaomi also expanded to Indonesia, Russia, Ukraine, etc.
